This super sweet baby blanket is  and easy to make shell and post stitch pattern that can be quickly made for a great gift or blanket for your own precious angel.  Using self-striping yarn makes it even easier to whip up this Sweet Sunset Baby Blanket!!

Supplies ~

YARN: 1150 yards of worsted weight yarn. I used 3 skeins of Caron Cakes in Spice Cake.

HOOK: Size J

 

Stitches ~

St – Stitch

Sk – Skip

Ch – Chain

Sc – Single Crochet

Hdc – Half Double Crochet

Dc – Double Crochet

Reverse Single Crochet

Bpdc – Back Post Double Crochet

Fpdc – Front Post Double Crochet

Shell – 5 dc in same stitch

RS – Right Side are even rows         WS – Wrong Side are odd rows

Size ~

36″ x 36″ after blocked

Instructions ~

Ch 100

Row 1:  Sc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. =99 sc

Row 2:  Ch 2(counts as hdc now and throughout), turn,  *hdc in next st, sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts*, repeat *to* 15 more times, hdc in last 2 sts. = 16 shells & 19 hdc

Row 3:  Ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), turn,  bpdc around next st, *sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts, bpdc around next st*, repeat *to* 15 more times, dc in last st. = 16 shells, 17 bpdc & 2 dc

Row 4:  Ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), turn,  fpdc around next st, *sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts, fpdc around next st*, repeat *to* 15 more times, dc in last st. = 16 shells, 17 fpdc & 2 dc

Rows 5 – 51:  Repeat rows 3 & 4

Edging ~

With RS facing join with sl st in chain of beginning ch on bottom right corner.

Round 1:  Ch 1, sc in same st, working up the side of rows, sc 77 sts evenly up the side, 3 sc in top of ch 3 from beginning ch 3 of row 51, * hdc in next st, sc in next 5 sts*, repeat *to* 15 more times, hdc in next st, 3 sc in next st, sc 77 evenly down the side of rows, 3 sc in 1st st of bottom left corner, sc in next 97 sts, 2 sc in same st as beginning sc. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 360 sts.

Round 2:  Ch 2, turn, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in next 99 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in next 79 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in next 99 sts, 3 hdc in next st, hdc in net 78 sts, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = = 368 sts

Round 3:   Do not turn, sl st in next st, sc in same st, ch 2, sc in same st*ch 2, sk st, sc in next st*, repeat *to* 50 more times, ch 2 s sc in same st(1st corner), repeat *to* 41 times, ch 2, sc in same sp(2nd corner), repeat *to* 51 times, ch 2, sc in same st(3rd corner), repeat *to* 40 times, ch 2, sk st, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 188 ch 2 sps

Round 4:  Do not turn, ch 1, sc in same st, 3 sc in next ch 2 sp, *sc in next st, sc in next ch 2 sp* repeat *to* 50 more times, sc in next st, 3 sc in next st, ch 2, repeat *to* 41 times, sc in next st, 3 sc in next ch 2 sp , repeat *to* 51 times, sc in next st, 3 sc in next ch 2 st, repeat *to* 41 times, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 384 sc

Round 5:  Ch 1, reverse sc  in each st around. = 384 reverse scs.

Finish off and weave in ends.

Block blanket into shape using wet or steam method.

That’s it!!!  Congratulations… you now have a Sweet Sunset Baby Blanket

  4. Hello, this is a beautiful blanket and I would love to make but in a larger size. I see you said it is a multiple of 6 but 100 is not divisible by 6. What is the formula please, if you don’t mind.

      Right.. That is just a starting chain and you have sides to the blanket.. but each shell section you want to add takes 6 more sts… *sk 2 sts, shell in next st, sk 2 sts, bpdc around next st*

  5. I wish the would state number of stitches needed to make pattern so it can resized.
