Whimsical Autumn Afghan Mystery Crochet Along… Week 3!!



Welcome to week 3 of this 10 week CAL!! This week we will make our third style of block for our afghan… It is super easy and maybe best of all.. You don’t have to weave in ends!! This weeks solid granny square could also be used to make a fun multicolor block afghan! I hope you are loving this crochet along and once it is put together.. it will be your favorite whimsical afghan in your collection!

This week you will make 5 of the Third Style of Granny Squares… There will be a total of 4 different square styles in different color combinations… Each week I will list the color sequence to follow and how many, plus the written instructions! I hope you enjoy this Fall Project as we make it together!!

If you are ready… Let’s get started with Week 3!!

Yarn Colors ~ 

A – Claret B – Gold(or Sunflower) C – Ocean D – Deep Purple(or Deep Violet) *You can you your own color combinations if you like!

Stitches ~

St – Stitch  Sk – Skip  Sp – Space  Sl St – Slip Stitch  Ch – Chain  Sc – Single Crochet  Dc – Double Crochet

Size ~

9″ x 9″ each square – Finished Afghan approx. 48″ x 66″

Make 5 Squares in the following color sequences:

1: A 2: B 3: C 4: D 5: C

Instructions ~

Round 1: Ch 4, 2 dc in 4th ch from hook, *ch 2, 3 dc in same sp*, repeat *to* 2 more times, ch 2, join with sl st to the top of beginning ch. = 4-ch 2 sp & 4-3dc groups

Round 2: Turn, sl st in ch 2 sp, ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), (2dc, ch 2, 3dc) in sp, *ch 1, (3dc, ch 2, 3dc) in next ch 2 sp*, Repeat *to* 2 more times, ch 1, join with sl st to top of ch 3. = 4-ch2 sp, 4-ch1 sp & 8-3dc groups

Round 3: Turn, sl st in ch 1 sp, ch 3, dc in next 3 sts, *(2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in next 3 sts, dc in ch 1, dc in next 3 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc in ch 2), dc in next 3 sts, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 4-ch 2sp & 44 dc

Round 4: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 5 sts, *(2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in next 11 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in last 5 sts, join to top of beginning ch 3 with sl st. = 4 – ch 2 sps & 60 dc

Round 5: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 7 sts, *(2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in next 15 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in last 7 sts, join to top of beginning ch 3 with sl st. = 4 – ch 2 sps & 76 dc

Round 6: Ch 3, turn, dc in next 9 sts, *(2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in next 19 sts*, repeat *to* 2 more times, (2dc, ch 2, 2dc) in ch 2 sp, dc in last 9 sts, join to top of beginning ch 3 with sl st. = 4 – ch 2 sps & 92 dc

Round 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st and 3 sc in each ch 2 sp(corner) around, Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 104 sc

That’s it!! You now have Square Style 3 complete! Make 4 more in the assigned colors.

You will want to block your squares in to shape.. I did mine as they were finished using the wet method on blocking squares…

  1. Hi. I have completed the first 15 blocks, and I am starting to worry about having enough yarn to complete all the blocks. I am using a J hook because I crochet tight, and my blocks are coming out at 9″ as directed.
