2023 Crochet with Me… Temperature Afghan CAL… Jan. – March 2023

Temperature Afghan CAL Jan- March 2023

Temperature Afghan CAL… 2020 Crochet with Me! January – March is now complete… So much fun! The first season flew by, looking back it was a little crazy in my neck of the woods, How about you??

If you don’t know about a Temperature Afghan CAL… You crochet a row each day(the pattern here is provided by me) in the daily average temp for your area using a color chart provided… So as the seasons go by… it shows a gradient color change… And for special occasions/holidays you can use a special color to make it more fun… Mine is sparkly blue! More info at the bottom of the post on how to get started!

January was a new year and my son turned 40! Our weather here in the small Northern California town of Mt. Shasta was one of the biggest start to snow in many years… In February, I retired from my day job and took one quick trip to the coast, got a new tattoo and one of my precious grandsons turned 2! My Granddaughter continued to race and went to States in Alpine Skiing… and guess what? More snow! In March we were buried in snow, temps ranged from low 20’s to a day that reached a high of mid 50… Yep once again my life was filled with shoveling! So I tucked in and did some pickling and bread baking… But, I was able to start my walking routine of 3-5 miles per day again… Felt great! See a few pics below of my March life! I also published 2 new patterns, Easy Elegant Shawl and Springtime Tic Tac Toe! Both free crochet patterns… so check those out!

Finally a path out!
Way to much show!
Digging out the car!

2023 Crochet with Me… Temperature Afghan CAL… Month 2 Complete!

2023 Crochet with Me… Temperature Afghan CAL… Month 2 Complete!

2023 Crochet with Me Temperature Afghan CAL

2023 Crochet with Me Temperature Afghan CAL… Month 2 Complete! I can’t believe how fast the first two months went by! So many things happened this February! First, I retired from my regular 9-5 job as a Purchasing Agent, Took a quick trip to the coast and added another tattoo, My youngest grandson turned 2, We had record snow, I was able to watch my oldest Granddaughter Ski in a Alpine Race and take 5th(she is now qualified for State!), and took a lot of downtime relaxing and crocheting… I have included some pics to show you my February 2023… In addition to that, I completed the second month of our CAL and love it so far! It has been pretty cold here so my colors have stayed in the lower tones! I also bought a beautiful storage ottoman to keep my projects in!

It’s Never to late to get started… Head to the Crochet with Me Tab at the top of the page and find the material list, temp charts and all the info including the pattern… Also each post has a link to get historical temps!

Love the colors so far for the first 2 months! One more month and one season will be complete! I hope you love this too, and if you want to join in anytime you can go to the Crochet with Me tab at the top of the page for all the directions, there is no wrong time to start. Make one season or a full year… The instructions will have a way to find your historical temps if you want to catch up or start later!

Here is what my 2023 Crochet with Me Temperature Afghan looked like at the end of January!

I was lucky to have worked for Roseburg Forest Products for 8 years as the Purchasing Agent for the Plant in my local area… I am even more blessed to give up this office so I could retire this last February!

Fort Bragg CA

One of the first things I did was head to the Northern California Coast to Fort Bragg for a little rest and relaxation!

I also stopped by Triangle Tattoo Museum in Fort Bragg and got this lovely tattoo from Nicola.. While there I met Madame Chinchilla and had a lovely long chat, she is amazing!… Read more about the museum and Madame Chinchilla along with Mr G by clicking here! So interesting!

Next was one of my favorite days, my youngest Grandson’s 2nd birthday… Love this guy so much!

In February we continued to get some extreme weather here in the Pacific Northwest… Tons of fresh snow and a lot of shoveling!

This month I was on the road up top our local ski area, Mt. Shasta Ski Park to watch my beautiful 15 year old Granddaughter in the Alpine Ski Races!!! The snow on the road was plowed taller than my car!

Of course, She looks like a pro to me… She did very well this season averaging 5th place as a high school sophomore… Now she is headed to State!!! This girl warms my heart and is the sweetest thing ever!

The only thing I missed was heading to see my 13 year old grandson and my daughter in Washington and my youngest daughter down in Santa Cruz.. Hopefully that will be March’s story!!!

I bought this lovely new storage ottoman to keep my project in… love it!

Here is a picture of the storage ottoman with my best yarn helper Ziggy!

I hope you all have had a great Winter so far… Stay tuned early April for my 2023 Temperature Afghan 1st Season/March completion post and more of my life story!

Q & A

  • Do I need to use the Hobby Lobby I Love Yarn? – No, you can use any brand and either use colors that are the same tone or make up your own color scheme
  • What if my temperatures are lower or higher than in the range posted? – You can adjust your range by moving the color scale up or down. If you want to use a smaller range, you can use smaller increments too and use less yarn colors. I have adjusted my personal scale to fit my local area and the sample of mine is below.
  • How does a 4 Season project work? – A season is a 3 month period, you can stop at the end or each season or continue and make 2 seasons together or continue and make the full year. You can also make each season and join them together later.
  • How do you know what temp to use each day? -You can use a weather app such as Weather.com to track your local temps. You can choose a time of day to look, the high or low or the average. Weather.com also has a monthly calendar so you can see the temp history incase you miss a day. Also, you can choose to just use the temps in your hometown or you can use them for where you are each day at the time you choose.
  • Joining new colors? -You will finish off each row leaving your tail. Without turning for the next row you will move to the first stitch on the righthand side and join your yarn. Another words, you will always work/start your new row on the right side.
  • How large will this be? – This temperature afghan project is worked length wise, so it will be approximately 65″ long not including fringe. The width for each season will be approximately 30-36″ wide depending on your tension. If you do a full year the width will be extra large somewhere around 125″, the original 65″ is the same and then you may use the lengthwise direction differently than if you stop at the seasonal lapghan style.
  • How do I join? – EASY, you can just come back here anytime and scroll through the feed, go to the Crochet with Me tab at the top of the page and get all the posts, Use the “Stay Connected” form on the right sidebar to get all posts by email or join the Beatrice Ryan Facebook CAL Group and posts are in the pinned area there.
  • What if I am behind? – You can get all of your daily historical temperatures on Weather.com and catch up!
  • Why are my stitch counts getting off? – Make sure when doing the fl dc that you don’t do your next bl sc in the stitch behind the fl dc. This will cause extra stitches.
  • Prizes? – Head to the Material List Post for all the info on the prizes

I have been using this lovely magnetic fridge calendar to track my temps and all of my life events,,, Love this one! Click Here for the Amazon link!

Above is a broad range of colors and temperature guide you can use! Of course, you can move your temperature range around to suit your area or even use less colors.

**Since my home town temperatures are within a range from lows of 10 degrees to highs of upper 90’s, I am going to use the daily average for myself. In order to use all of the yarn colors I purchased(25 colors), I have listed how I varied my temp chart increments. You can change yours up too if you like to get more or less colors. The above picture is just a suggestion of yarn colors and temperatures.

2023 Crochet with Me Temperature Afghan CAL Season 1 Day 9/Row 9 Instructions and beyond!

Today for me in Mt. Shasta California, The Low was 37 degrees, High was 46 degrees …. My color today for the average is 42 degrees, On my personalized chart that is Hot Orchid. I was so happy to use a new color!

We Finally woke up to a sunshiny day and it was beautiful all day… Below are my pictures today… On my way to work Mt Shasta was peaking out of the clouds to show off its new layer of show… And Black Butte(a small cinder cone volcano) showed off its back drop of a beautiful blue sky... When I left work(in Weed CA about 15 miles north of home), I was able to catch a Northern side view of Mt Shasta at sunset... I live in a beautiful area!!!

Instructions

Day 9/Row 9:  Ch 1, sc in 1st st, bl sc in next 6 sts, * fldc in next st 2 rows below, blsc in next 6 sts*, repeat *to* 27 more times, fldc in next st 2 rows below, sc in last st. = 29 fldc , 2 sc & 174 blsc(all rows now will have this count). Finish off and Move to the RH side to join next color
