October is Breast Cancer Awareness Month and if you have followed me very long, you know my passion and heart towards this cause.  In 2007, I lost my dearest friend Sandra Gilb to breast cancer…. With each Amazing Grace Pattern, they are dedicated to those who are suffering, recovering and taking care of those who are battling cancer or other dramatic life events!  Please pay it forward by using this free pattern and making and gifting an item to someone in need, while making some for yourself.


Amazing Grace Baby Cocoon… What a lovely gift this will make for any beautiful little angel!!  And if you know someone with an infant who is suffering from illness or displacement, this would be a great way of  paying it forward!! 20″ Long x 28″ Around The Top

Gauge ~ 

8 Hdc x 4 Rows = 2″ x 2″

Materials ~

Yarn: Caron Simply Soft – 450 total yards.

3 Colors – Color A: Blue Mint 200 yards Color B: Rainbow Bright 75 yards Color C: Orange 175 yards

Hook: I or hook to meet gauge

Stitches ~

St ~ Stitch      Sl St ~ Slip Stitch      Sk ~ Skip      Ch ~ Chain     Sp ~ Space     Sc ~ Single Crochet     Hdc ~ Half Double Crochet      Dc ~ Double Crochet     Rev Sc ~ Reverse Single Crochet

Tips ~

*You will be working in the round

*The easiest way to do the color changing in this pattern is to carry the colors up as you go and not cut the yarn each round

 


Instructions ~

Begin with a Magic Circle

With Color A

Round 1:  Ch 2(counts as hdc now and throughout) in center of magic circle, 9 more hdc in center of space. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 10 hdc

Round 2:  Ch 2, hdc in same st,  2 hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 20 hdc

Round 3:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next st, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next st*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. =30 hdc

Round 4:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 2 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 2 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 40 hdc

Round 5:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 3 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 3 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 50 hdc

Round 6:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 4 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 4 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 60 hdc

Round 7:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 5 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 5 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 70 hdc

Round 8:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 6 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 6 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 80 hdc

Round 9:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 7 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 7 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 90 hdc

Round 10:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, hdc in next 8 sts, *2 hdc in next st, hdc in next 8 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 100 hdc

Round 11:  Ch 2, hdc in same st, *hdc in next 15 sts, 2 hdc in next st*, repeat 6 times, hdc in next 2 sts, 2 hdc in last st. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 108 hdc

Round 12:  Ch 2, Hdc in each st around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 108 hdc

Change to Color B

Round 13:  Ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st, sk 2 sts, *(sc, ch 2, sc) in next st, sk 2 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to beginning. = 36 (sc, ch 2, sc)

Change to Color C

Round 14:  Join with sl st in ch 2 sp, ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), 2 dc in same sp, *3 dc in next ch2 sp*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 36 3dc shells

Change to Color B

Round 15:  Join with sl st in middle st of 3dc shell, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st, sk 2 sts, *(sc, ch 2, sc), sk 2 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 36 (sc, ch 2, sc)

Change to Color A

Round 16:  Join with sl st in ch 2 sp, ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), 2 dc in same sp, *3 dc in next ch2 sp*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 36 3dc shells

Change to Color B

Round 17:  Join with sl st in middle st of 3dc shell, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st, sk 2 sts, *(sc, ch 2, sc), sk 2 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 36 (sc, ch 2, sc)

Change to Color C

Round 18:  Join with sl st in ch 2 sp, ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), 2 dc in same sp, *3 dc in next ch2 sp*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 36 3dc shells

Change to Color B

Round 19:  Join with sl st in middle st of 3dc shell, ch 1, (sc, ch 2, sc) in same st, sk 2 sts, *(sc, ch 2, sc), sk 2 sts*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 36 (sc, ch 2, sc)

Rounds 20-43: Repeat the same sequence of rounds 16-19 including color changes.

Change to Color A

Round 44:  Join with sl st in ch 2 sp, ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), 2 dc in same sp, *3 dc in next ch2 sp*, repeat *to* around. Join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 36 3dc shells

Round 45:  Ch 1, sc around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 108 sc

Change to Color C

Round 46: Ch 1, sc around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 108 sc

Change to Color B

Round 47:  Ch 1, sc around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 108 sc

Change to Color C

Round 48:   Ch 1, sc around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 108 sc

Change to Color A

Round 49: Ch 1, sc around. Join with sl st to beginning sc. = 108 sc

Round 50:  Reverse sc around. Join to beginning.

Finish off

Weave in ends.

*This project looks best if blocked. You can use either the steam or wet method*

Size:                      Newborn-3 Months

Materials:            Red Heart Soft Baby Steps Yarn- 2 Skeins, 5 oz each or any soft worsted weight yarn desired.     

                              Crochet Hook, Size H or hook to obtain proper gauge

Abbreviations:                       Ch-Chain              Sc-Single Crochet            Dc-Double Crochet          St-Stitch

 

Beginning Shell Pattern:      Ch 3, Skip 2 Sts, 5 Dc in next St, Skip next 2 Sts.

Shell Pattern:                         Dc in St, Skip 2 Sts, 5 Dc in next st, Skip next 2 Sts.

Gauge:                                     3”x 3” Shell Pattern Swatch = 2 Shell repeats x 5 Rows.

 

Note: Pattern is worked in the round and all joining stitches are joined to the beginning stitch.


 

Cocoon 24” x 18”

Make a Magic Ring.

Row 1: Ch 2 (Does not count as a stitch now and throughout), 12 Dc in Magic Ring, Join to beginning Dc. Pull Tail to tighten ring. = 12 Dc

Row 2: Ch 2, 2 Dc in each St around, Join to beginning. = 24 Dc

Row 3:  Ch 2, *2 Dc in first St, 1 Dc in next St*, Repeat **around, Join. = 36 Dc.

Row 4: Ch 2, *2 Dc in first St, 1 Dc in next 2 Sts*, Repeat ** around, Join. = 48 Dc

Row 5: Ch 2, *2 Dc in first St, 1 Dc in next 3 Sts*, Repeat ** around, Join. = 60 Dc

Row 6: Ch 2, *2 Dc in first St, 1 Dc in next 4 Sts *, Repeat ** around, Join. = 72 Dc

Row 7: Ch 2, * 2 Dc in first St, 1 Dc in next 5 Sts*, Repeat ** around, Join. = 84 Dc

Row 8: Chain 3 (Counts as 1st Dc now and  throughout), Skip next 2 Sts, 5 Dc in next St, Skip next 2 Sts (Beginning Shell Pattern made), *Dc in next St, Skip next 2 Sts, 5 Dc in next St, Skip next 2 Sts* Shell Pattern Made, Repeat** 13 times. Join to the top of Ch 3. = 14 Shell Pattern Repeats (including Beginning Shell Pattern).

Rows 9 – 31: Repeat row 8.

Row 32-33:  Ch 1 Sc around = 84 Sc

Row 34: Ch 1, *Sc in 4 Sts, Ch 3, Sc in same St (Picot Made)* Repeat Around, Join. Finish Off and Weave in ends  = 21 Picot

Make Magic Ring

Row 1: Ch 1,  Sc 8 in Ring. Join. = 8 Sc

Row 2: Ch1, Sc in 1st St,* 3 Dc in next St, Sc in next St*. Repeat ** around, Join. = 4 sc, 4 Dc Clusters.

Row 3: Ch 3, Skip St, 5 Dc in next St, Skip St (Beginning Shell Pattern Made),* Dc in next St, Skip St, 5 Dc in next St, Skip St ( Shell Pattern Made)*, Repeat ** around, Join. = 4 Shell Pattern Repeats.

Row 4: Ch 3,  Skip 1 St,* 3 Dc in next  St, 1 Dc in next St, 3 Dc in next  St, Skip St ◊, Dc in next  St, Skip St*. Repeat ** around 4 times ending at ◊, Join. = 4 Repeats.

Row 5: Ch 3, Skip St,*5 Dc in next St, Skip St, Dc in next St, Skip St*, Repeat ** around, Join. = 8 Shell Pattern Repeats.

7.-9: Repeat Row 6

Row 10: Ch 1, Sc in each st around, Join.

Row 11: Ch 1 Turn, Sc in each around, Join. (This is the only round you turn)
