2020 Crochet with Me!! 7th Annual Winter Mystery Afghan CAL… Week 2



Welcome back! If you have already started this Mystery Afghan CAL, I hope you are having a great time… If you are just joining in now, Welcome! As you saw last week, this is a traditional chevron pattern and it has some twists and turns… During this CAL, hopefully you will learn some new stitches and/or advance your crochet ability!!

Each week I will post a easy section for you to complete, and in 12 weeks… You will have a fun, whimsical afghan!

There are a few prizes involved in this years 2020 Winter Mystery Afghan CAL..

Grand Prize – There will be a $50 Amazon Gift Card for 1 lucky winner at the end of the CAL. The grand prize will be drawn on Sunday May 24th 2020. To be eligible, you must email a picture and permission by Friday May 22nd, 2020 to [email protected] showing your completed project. Entries will be numbered by the order they arrive and the number will be drawn using a random number generator.

Monday Treasure Hunt Weekly Prize – Each Monday starting March 2nd, 2020 a $10 Amazon Gift Card will be given away to one member in the Beatrice Ryan Designs CAL Group on Facebook. Each Monday, a post will be made explaining the rules to enter. The entry time will only last part of the day… so stay tuned in the group!

  • St ~ Stitch
  • Sl St ~ Slip Stitch
  • Sk ~ Skip
  • Ch ~ Chain
  • Bl ~ Back Loop
  • Dec Sc ~ Decrease Single Crochet *Insert hook in next st, pull up loop, insert hook in next st, pull up loop, Yo and draw through all 3 loops on hook*
  • Sc ~ Single Crochet
  • Blsc ~ Back Loop Single Crochet
  • Dc ~ Double Crochet
  • Bobble St ~ Yarn over, insert hook in indicated stitch or space, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook, (yarn over, insert hook in same stitch or space, yarn over, pull up a loop, yarn over, draw through 2 loops on hook) 2 times (4 loops on hook), yarn over, draw through all remaining loops on hook.

Instructions:

**Each week you will be repeating the blsc row 3 several times(in the color indicated for the row repeat) … Here it is so you don’t have to go back to week 1…

Row 3: Ch 1, turn, dec blsc over the next 2 sts, blsc in next 8 sts, *3 blsc in next st, blsc in next 9 sts, sk 2 sts, blsc in next 9 sts*, repeat *to* 9 more times, 3 blsc in next st, blsc in next 8 sts, dec blsc over the last 2 sts. =231 blsc


Join Color C

Rows 21-30: Repeat Row 3

Finish off after row 30

Join Color D

Rows 31-34: Repeat Row 3

*Tip for row 35 ~ Work in the back loops. Also, Watch your chains and sk sts, they are in specific places to make the count work. In some areas you do not ch or sk.

Row 35: Ch4(dc + ch1), turn, sk 2 sts, * Bl bobble st in next st, ch 1, sk st*, Repeat *to* 2 more times, Bl bobble st in next st, {3 bldc in next st, repeat *to* 4 times, Bl bobble st in next st, sk 2, repeat *to* 4 times, Bl bobble st in next st}, repeat {to} 9 more times, 3 bldc in next st, repeat *to* 3 times, Bl bobble st in next st, ch 1, sk 2 sts, bldc in last st. = 35 bldc, 88 ch & 108 bl bobble sts

*Tip for row 36: You will be working in the chains and sts, make sure you recognize the 4th ch at the end of the row as a st to go in then the 3rd ch as the last st

Rows 36-39: Repeat row 3.

Finish off at the end of row 39

** The approx. length at the end of this week is 16″ laid flat not stretched

Band ~ 20″ un-stretched Hat height ~ 9″


Materials: 

Yarn ~ 155 yds of #5 bulky yarn, Patons Alpaca Blend in Smoke pictured above.

Hook~ H hook

Optional ~ Pompom


Stitches:

  • St – Stitch
  • Sl St Slip Stitch
  • Ch – Chain
  • Sk – Skip
  • Dec – Decrease
  • Sc – Single Crochet
  • Hdc – Half Double Crochet
  • Dc – Double Crochet
  • Fphdc – Front Post Half Double Crochet
  • *X-St – Sk St, Dc in next St, Dc in previously Sk St

Instructions: 

Band:

Row 1: Ch 7, fphdc in 2nd ch from hook and each across. = 6 fphdc

Row 2-54: Ch 2(counts as hdc), turn, fphdc across. = 6 fphdc

Sl st ends of row 1 & 54 together to form band

Hat:

Round 1: Join yarn with a sl st in side of row of band. Ch 1, Sc 54 evenly around band.

Round 2: Ch 3(counts as dc now and throughout), Xst over next 2 sts, *Dc in next st, Xst over next 2 sts*, Repeat *to* around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 18 Xsts & 18 dc

Round 3 & 4: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 54 sc

Round 5: Ch 3, turn, Xst over next 2 sts, *Dc in next st, Xst over next 2 sts*, Repeat *to* around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 3. = 18 Xsts & 18 dc

Round 6 & 7: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 54 sc

Round 8: Repeat round 5

Round 9 and 10: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 54 scR

Round 11: Repeat round 5

Rounds 12: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next 7 sts, sc dec*, repeat *to* around. = 48 sc

Round 13: Ch 1, turn, sc around, join with sl st to beginning. = 48 sc

Round 14: Repeat round 5. = 16 x sts & 16 Dc

Round 15: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next 6 sts, sc dec*, repeat *to* around. =42 sc

Round 16: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next 5 sts, sc dec*, repeat *to* around. =36

Round 17: Repeat round 5. = 12 Xsts & 12 Dc

Round 18: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next 4 sts, sc dec*, repeat *to* around. =18 sc

Round 19: Ch 1, turn, *sc in next 3 sts, sc dec*, repeat *to* around. =12 sc

Finish off leaving a 6″ tail

Using a yarn needle, weave the tail through the 12 sc and draw closed. Secure and weave in end.

Optional: Add pom pom to top

That’s it… You now have a Soft & Chic Beanie!!
