Welcome Back to this years 9th Annual Crochet with Me! Mystery Winter Afghan Crochet Along! This is Week 2 of the 10 week Mile A Minute Afghan project… If you are just joining, it is never to late to start!

You can find the Material/Info post by clicking here, and you can find Week 1 instructions by clicking here! Both of these and all past and future CAL posts can always be found in the Crochet with Me Tab at the top of the page.

How does this work? Each week I post an easy to do section for 10 weeks. You can come here each Sunday afternoon and get the next set of instructions, Click on the Crochet with Me Tab at the top of the page to find them, join my Beatrice Ryan Designs Facebook CAL Group or in the right sidebar enter your email in Stay Connected to get all my posts by email as they are released.

This week we will finish strip number 1 of the Mile a Minute style afghan and start strip number 2. This week is super easy, no joining, no squares, just easy going crochet!

Also, don’t forget to add this project to your Ravelry favorites for easy access! CLICK HERE

Don’t forget the other fun, there will be a Grand Prize at the end and weekly prizes too! Details at the bottom of the post!

For sneak peaks, join me on Instagram.. I sometimes show off early pics!

Now for some of the Week 2 details:

This year the project is worked in strips that are in rounds then attached(Mile A Minute). It is a Rectangular Afghan approx. 70″ x 60″ . You can make it in your choice of worsted weight yarn #4. Stashbuster, Ombre’, Self- Striping or even a color theme… At least 2 colors are recommended. I am making mine using the self striping yarn and complementing colors, but you can change colors each row or do yours in your own color scheme.

Let’s get the stitching started!

Tips:

If using self striping yarn, it will change sometimes in the middle of the row… This is ok

If changing colors,(not using self striping or ombre’) The instructions don’t say to when to change color due to the use of self-striping/ombre being used, but you will change every row after the flowers are joined and you will join in the space you joined in unless otherwise stated.

Work your ends in with a yarn needle as you go…This makes it much easier in the end…

Week 1 size 66″ x 8 1/2″ Week 2 size 61″ x 4 1/4″ (this is a partial strip to be finished next week)Different yarns and tensions may make your slightly different.. Don’t let it be to much of a variance or your project will be way to big or way to small

For sneak peaks, join me on Instagram.. I sometimes show off early pics!

Now for some of the details:

This year the project is worked in the round, turning over each round(unless indicated differently). It is a Square Afghan approx. 65″ x 65″ . You can make it in your choice of worsted weight yarn #4. Stashbuster, Ombre’, Self- Striping or even a color theme… At least 2 colors are recommended.

Tips:

Make sure to choose the directions that you started with in Week 8, A or B

Style A uses an I Hook, Style B uses your H Hook

You will continue to use your contrasting color for the border

Week size 65″ x 65″ … Different yarns and tensions may make your slightly different.. Don’t let it be to much of a variance or your project will be way to big or way to small

Week 9 Stitches:

Ch – Chain   St – Stitch   Sl St – Slip Stitch   Sp – Space

Sc–Single Crochet  Hdc-Half Double Crochet

Dc-Double Crochet

Week 9 Border Instructions: Continue with Style A or B

Style A is a Double Sided Border, ones side worked on the wrong side and one worked on the right side then joined at the top edge. This is a double thick boarder much like the satin blanket binding you would sew on both sides of a blanket edging found on baby blankets or quilts. It is a great technique and many people use this when they have a lot of tails left on the ends.. You dont have to weave those ends in when using this technique

Style B is a whimsical style, much like any other of my edging designs on past afghans.

Week 9 Style A Instructions:

*We will be working the first side of the double sided edge this week and then the second side, make sure you have the correct sides facing per instructions so it turns out right

Continuing on the first side and using an I hook~

Round 5: Ch 1, turn, sc in each st around(just one in the corners this round), join with sl st to beginning sc. FO. = 824 sc

Side 2 of the double sided edging~

Working on the WS in the sl sts not used yet(see pic below)

Round 6: Join with sl st to any corner sl st, ch 2, 2 hdc in same st, hdc in next 199 sl sts, *3 hdc in next sl st(corner), hdc in next 199 sl sts*, repeat *to* around, join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 808 hdc

Round 7: Ch 2, do not turn, *3 hdc in corner st, hdc in next 201 sts*, repeat *to* around, (you will only do 200 hdc on last side, ch 2 counted as the 201 st) join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 816 hdc

Round 8: Ch 2, do not turn, hdc in next st, *3 hdc in corner st, hdc in next 203 sts*, repeat *to* around, (you will only do 201 hdc on last side, ch 2 counted as the 203 st) join with sl st to top of beginning ch 2. = 824 hdc

Finish off

Thats it.. if you chose this style, Congrats!!! You are done with week 9!!!

This shows both edges of the double sided border that sandwich the top of round 59(last round of blanked section) Next week we will finish off by joining the 2 edges to make a beautiful double thick border edge

Week 9 Style B instructions:

Using an H hook and continuing with your contrasting color yarn

Round 4: Do not turn, 2 sl sts in next ch 4 sp, ch 1, sc in same sp, *ch 4, sc in next ch 4 sp*, repeat *to* 48 more times, {ch 4, (dc,ch1,dc) in corner, repeat *to* 51 times}, repeat {to} 2 more times, ch 4, (dc,ch1,dc) in corner, ch 4, sc in ch 4 sp, ch 4, sl st to beginning sc. = 204 sc, 208 ch 4 sp & 4 – (dc,ch1,dc)

Round 5: Do not turn, ch 1, *3 sc in next ch 4, ch 1, sk st*, repeat *to* 49 more times, [(sc,ch2,sc) in corner ch 1 sp, ch 1, repeat *to* 52 times}, repeat {to} 2 more times, (sc,ch2,sc) in corner ch 1sp, ch 1, repeat *to* 2 times, join with sl st to beginning sc. = 4- (sc,ch2,sc), 624 sc & 212 ch 1 sp

Round 6: Do not turn, ch 1, *5dc shell in next ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp*, repeat *to* 24 more times, sk ch 1 sp, {9dc in corner ch 2 sp, sk 1st ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp, repeat *to* 25 times, sk last ch 1 sp}, repeat {to} 2 more times, 9 dc in corner ch 2 sp, sk 1st ch 1 sp, sc in next ch 1 sp, join with sl st to 1st dc. = 100 5dc shells, 104 sc & 4 – 9dc shells

That’s it, You are now done with week 9!!! One more week and your project is done!!!
